Saturday!

That's right, we went to Yarn Con.

After I noted that the lady at the door had failed to complete my "x", Josh pointed out that it was most likely intended to be a "y". As he put it, "Y, for yarn."

The event was a little underwhelming. Especially after the Stitches marketplace. I didn't buy anything. I saw some fiber and yarn that I liked, but not anything that really struck me. More yarn money for another day I guess. They gave us nifty little yarn con pins, Josh said he wasn't going to wear his, go figure. I'm glad I went. If I decide to go again I'll probably try to take a more yarn centric companion.

Baby Turkish Delight!

My new spindle arrived today! It's a Baby Turkish Delight from Jenkins Woodworking out in Oregon. It's very pretty, the arms are made of Osage Orange, and the spindle shaft is maple, I think (I might be lying about it being maple). Anyway, I took some quick phone photos when I opened it at work today. I'll take better ones soon. They wrapped it in some dyed wool roving and tissue paper, and the parts were padded with some silk fiber. I'm excited to try the silk. I spun a little wool with it tonight and I love it!

Learning to make yarn.

My first yarn.  

Made from some mystery wool included with my drop spindle.  It came out on the thicker side, with some super thin spots.  

My second yarn.  

Just as thick/thin as the first.  Made from "domestic top" roving, mostly natural with the last bit spun from leftover dyed scraps.  A little closer to worsted weight (for the most part)

I signed up for a spinning class, bought a (large) drop spindle, practiced on the wool that came with it, practiced on more wool that I had laying around, went to my first class, made a littler drop spindle, spun tiny skinny yarn, took lots of roving home to practice, continued spinning tiny skinny yarn, ordered another (smaller) drop spindle, set up this blog and am now waiting for my new drop spindle to arrive while spinning another spindle-full of tiny skinny yarn so that I can ply it with the first spindle-full I made.  Ta-da! 

I will post photos of the tiny skinny yarn that I've been making soon.  Maybe once it's plied...
